Basement Remodel Part 2 ~ The Powder Room

Hello Tuesday!  

I hope everyone went out and VOTED today!!! 

Yesterday I shared my latest project

~ The British Pub Basement Remodel~ 

Today I am going to show you the fun Powder Room.  Unfortunately I don't have any "Before" pictures in my files.  But believe me when I tell you it was a shell of a space just waiting for some TLC.  It was carpeted which I always hate in a bathroom.  Carpet and bathrooms do NOT belong together people!  Anyway, this powder room was very large, about 11x7.  Under the carpet was a drain for a bathtub.  They often do that in basements, leave a space for a tub or toilet but not install one.  I couldn't see any reason to put a bathtub in because there is no bedroom in the basement.  Bathtubs or showers as a general rule will cost you about $3,000-$5,000.  My clients didn't want to spend the money and I don't blame them.  So come on and let's look at the changes and I'll show you what our plans are for the future.

See these little guys?  

They are the inspiration for our space.  

 As are these cuties!  

They were rescued by my clients back in July and have been settling in quite nicely. (Which translates as they are owning the house)

Again, I am posting these pictures right after the completion of the remodel so no pictures or decor has been hung.  We continued the same tile as that around the bar in this room but added the white 13x13 tiles that have a Carrera Marble look to them.  I think it turned out fantastic!  I couldn't be happier!  Well, I could be happier if we would have moved the toilet over beside the vanity but you can't have everything!  Moving plumbing in a basement is not that easy folks!  

Why they originally put it here I have no clue!  

See where the utility cart is?  

That's where a bathtub would go if there was one.  

Now, close your eyes and imagine for just a minute that there is a double basin utility sink right there in that spot.  

We are going to put one in and call it a Dog Wash!  

Trust me those little guys need lots of baths!  

They romp around outside in the mud and bring their dirty little paws inside.  

Something like this is what we have in mind.  

The plumbing is all installed and just waiting for us 

to get it all hooked up.  

Won't that look fabulous?  

And if later on a new homeowner wants to put in a bathtub 

it's a cinch.

We painted the walls a soft Antique White and punched up the wainscoting with a High Gloss Black.  

If you look closely at the wainscoting you will see 

my "happy accident".

 OK, see the beadboard?  

The contractor was supposed to install the beadboard at 42" high.  I stood right in that bathroom and we marked the spot with an X!!!  I come back a few hours later and the beadboard is only 36" high.  Oy Vey!  So what do you do?  I guess I could have argued til I was blue in the face and make him take it all down and he probably would have charged my clients double.  Yep, it was those kinds of things that got him axed.  Instead I had him install a chair rail at the correct height and then come painting time we enameled it all as one piece.  Now if I wouldn't have told you all of that you would have thought I executed this plan on purpose.  So, I call these types of mishaps "Happy Accidents"  cause you could spend your life being mad or you can rise to every challenge and find a solution.  

My BFF found this mirror at Nebraska Furniture Mart in the scratch and dent section.  We couldn't find a thing wrong with it and it fits perfectly with our vanity.  We kept the original vanity and painted it Bone White the same color as the trim on the crown in the entertainment area.  Eventually we will switch this vanity out with a pedestal sink.  

So, that wraps up part two of the basement remodel.
